Bolas de Berlim

Oddly enough I’m a night owl and a morning person (Rui would not agree with the latter). I love being the last person awake at home, there is peace to being up late when everyone else is sleeping. As a young mom that was normally ‘my time’ since everyone would be in bed and no one could call my name or ask me for something. Unless your a mom, I don’t think you will understand how those hours of peace and quiet while everyone you love is safe and sleeping under one roof – those are the best hours of the day. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my family, but I used to love those late evenings.

Now as I get older, I find that the morning hours are the best. Getting up earlier when the house is quiet and you are able to read a book, catch up on news and events without interruption = perfection!

During the summer months Rui and I like to take a drive into wine country (towards Niagara Falls) on the weekend and pick up fresh fruit, bread and cheese at the local stands. This past weekend was a busy one, so we opted for an early morning drive to the Portuguese bakery in Mississauga. I know what you thinking? Mississauga for a bakery? Well, once you taste their bread and pastries, you too would wake up early.

Since I was a child, I’ve always loved bolas de berlim a Portuguese donut filled with custard….heavenly. No we are not counting calories. The bakery I have been going to since I was a child whips the filing of custard and it’s by far the best I’ve ever had. Trips to Portugal and tasting the original can’t beat the one’s you get in Mississauga.

Life is not all about food, but boy there is some amazing food out there and as my husband says, we need to start with dessert.
